Gulistan Dance Theater
Gulistan (GOO-li-stahn) means “flower garden” in both Persian and Uzbek and is a fitting name for this unique ensemble’s captivating repertoire. Founded in 1999 by artistic director Carolyn Krueger, Gulistan presents both traditional and imaginative dances rooted in the cultures of the Central Asian Silk Road. Gulistan has appeared in Europe, Uzbekistan, across the U.S. and throughout California, and has received several nominations for the prestigious Lester Horton Award. Specializing in the elegant and rhythmic dances of Uzbekistan, Gulistan has been entrusted with over a dozen traditional choreographies by People’s Artist of Uzbekistan, Viloyat Akilova, and her late father, Isakhar Akilov. www.gulistandance.com
